Time off the hard way, take two

Just our very innocent attempt at getting a picture of another trailer truck messing up the same light post as last year.  You’ll excuse the bad pic quality, this was from a Nokia phone that I am changing as of next week.  Merry Christmas everybody, and yes, thank you to all trailer truck drivers out there.

Increase application response time with Memcached

Our team has been working over the course of the current 2 years on several massive multi-user platforms for some of our clients.  Coding the platforms is one thing, any self respecting development shop can get that done.  But truly optimizing the platform to a point where it sings (literally), is a real undertaking (or thankfully, a neverending chore).  Performance, disk I/O, database access latency, network speed and carefully programmed algorithms are all part of that package, but one of the most impressive upgrades is the use of memory based caching, specifically with Memcached.

Cakephp plugin models without tables

This one kept me up a few days while doing development. The documentation at the Cakephp.org site does not mention that models from a plugin referenced have to be added in the $uses array on a controller as $uses=array(‘Plugin.Model’). So of course, without the name of the plugin to look up the files, our beloved plugin kept missing the mark. I hope it helps those poor souls out there some to get their code in better shape.

Time off – The hard way at Quality XP Development

Uncredible
Well, whomever said that taking time off was easy. This was us at the office after a trailer truck pretty much took out the power, our cable modem backup, and the light post fell on top of the box dishing out the ADSL we use… So, coffee anyone? Whoever said that software development was just about dealing with software anyways?
